Artist Statement

For me, “trusting the process” is at the core of my creative work, both painting and songwriting.  Yes, technical skills must be learned and honed, but the magic doesn’t happen until I totally surrender myself to letting things be as they may.  Having painted now for over twenty years, I’ve learned to get out of the way and let paintings take on lives of their own.  Same deal with my songwriting…  the songs are fully capable and ready to write themselves, if I only let them.

When I’m asked to explain one of my paintings, my respectful response is, “What does it mean to you?” Each viewing experience is unique, and shaped by past experiences. I might, however, suggest that non-objective paintings are often best experienced through the gut.  Feel them, and don’t worry about defining or even understanding them.
